If smaller is better, then the Model 851 series sonars are terrific! The latest model in the Imagenex rotary sonar product line has been designed for compatibility with the next generation of hand launchable Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Combining an innovative fluid filled transducer housing with miniaturization of a standard sonar design using advanced surface mount electronics, the unit has been reduced to a small rotary transducer unit coupled by a fluid filled compensation hose to a 1" diameter by 9" long pressure housing. Thus the electronics unit can be tucked into existing ROV's without modifying the design to make room, and the rotary transducer unit can be mounted nearly anywhere.
The Model 851 shares some of the design features with the Model 881A. The innovative fluid filled transducer housing protects the transducer and continuously lubricates the motor. An advanced processor and supporting electronics provide the high speed, high resolution digitization and communications to the host PC. Currently the Model 851 is available in an imaging configuration with optimization for scan speed and low power consumption.
Applications for the Model 851 include obstacle avoidance for hand launchable ROVs, adding long range imaging to hard suit commercial diving equipment, and retrofit to existing underwater equipment.
